Labata Dead Leaf Mantis (Deroplatys lobata)

Updated:

Size

6–7.5 cm (2.4–3.0 in); females broader with pronounced leaf-like pronotum.

Moisture

Mist 4–6× per week in small amounts; keep substrate slightly moist—but never soggy.

65–80% Humidity

Prefers higher RH with strong ventilation. Allow surfaces to dry between sprays to prevent mold.

Temperature

Warm but not hot; diffuse light suits the “forest floor leaf” lifestyle.

22–26 °C (72–79 °F)

Short nighttime dips are fine; avoid prolonged exposure below 20 °C (68 °F).

Sexing

From ~i4 by sternites (♀ 6, ♂ 8). Adult males have longer wings and are lighter; females are heavier with round abdomen.

Lifespan

10–13 months total; adult females ~6–7 months, males ~3–5 months.

Instars

Females often require one additional molt compared to males.

Feeding

i1–i3: Drosophila spp., tiny roaches/crickets.

i4–i6: House/green/blue bottle flies, small roaches, small hoppers.

i7–adult: Blue/green bottle flies, larger flies, small roaches/locusts. Offer prey every 2–3 days; they can be shy, so avoid overcrowding with live feeders.

Tip: Offer prey from below perches or allow to climb naturally to encourage strikes.

Enclosure

i1–i3: 5.5 oz deli with mesh lid and side vents.

i4–i5: 16 oz deli / small terrarium with cross-flow vents.

i6–i8: 32 oz deli / medium terrarium (≥10–12″ tall).

Subadult–Adult: 12–16″ tall; multiple vertical/angled twigs and broad leaves; substrate of coco fiber with leaf litter works well.

Other Info

Masters of leaf mimicry; prefer calmer enclosures and benefit from visual cover (flat leaves, bark panels).
