Blue Tongue Skinks

Blue tongue skinks are ground-dwelling, personable omnivores that reward keepers with genuine interactivity. Get the enclosure size and heat gradient right and they’re refreshingly straightforward.

Enclosure

  • Floor space over height. An adult needs a minimum of roughly 4’ x 2’ of floor space — bigger is always better.
  • Deep substrate. They burrow, so provide several inches of a diggable, mildly moisture-holding substrate.
  • Hides & clutter. Offer secure hides and some cover so they feel safe enough to explore in the open.

Heating & lighting

  • Basking surface: ~95–105°F depending on species; cool end: high 70s°F.
  • UVB: Provide appropriate UVB across the basking zone.
  • Control heat with a thermostat and confirm with accurate thermometers.

Diet

Blue tongues are omnivores — variety is the whole game:

  • ~50% protein (lean meats, insects, high-quality wet dog food in moderation)
  • ~40% vegetables and greens
  • ~10% fruit as an occasional treat

Dust with calcium and a reptile multivitamin on a sensible schedule.

Handling

Support the whole body and keep sessions calm. Most skinks tame down quickly and tolerate regular, gentle handling.
